Keith is 37. He’s married, and he’s got two children: a boy and a girl.

He works as a printer's reader. He’s a good-looking man: very tall and quite slim, with light brown hair. He has a soft deep voice. Today he’s wearing white trousers and a blue striped T-shirt. He wears an ear-ring in his left ear.

Sue is 33. She’s married, and she’s got two children: a boy and a girl. She works as a part-time nurse. She’s pretty: slim and blonde, not very tall. She has quite a hard voice. Today she’s wearing olive green trousers and a shirt of the same colour.

John’s 41, but he looks older. He’s married with two children: a boy and a girl. He works with race horses. He’s very short, slim and thin-faced — but very strong. He’s got dark brown hair. He’s the only one of these five people with a northern accent. Today he’s wearing black trousers and a blue short-sleeved shirt.

Alexandra is 17. She has just left school. She’s not married and has no children. She wants to be a policewoman. She is not very tall, rather heavily built, and has red hair. Today she is wearing a brown and white sweater and blue jeans.

Jane is 37. She is married with two children: a boy and a girl. She works as a part-time secretary with a firm of solicitors. She’s pretty: slim and dark-haired, not very tall. Today she’s wearing a grey skirt and a white blouse.

I: All right, Keith. How old are you?

K: Thirty-seven.

I: Thirty-seven yeah? And, erm, you married?

K: Yes.

I: Yeah. Have you got children?

I: Yeah. What are their names?

K: Toby and Lucy.

I: How old are they?

K: One’s 11, that’s Lucy; and Toby’s 13.

I: Yeah. Tell me about your job, Keith.

I: Children?

S: Two — a girl who is eight, and a boy who’s seven.

I: Yeah.

S: Stephanie and Malcolm,

I: Erm, work, Sue. What do you do?

S: Nursing part-time. 7.30 in the morning till 1.30, or 4.30 till 9.30.

I: How do you get to work?

S: By car.

I: How long does it take?

S: Half an hour.

I: OK. Tell me some things you like doing. Sue.

S: Reading.

I: Mm. What do you read?

S: Erm. Philosophy.

I: Yeah.

S: And, erm, I like Dick Francis and those sort of novels.

Erm, and the old historical novel, and more serious novels as well.

I: What newspapers do you read?

S: Erm, I very rarely read a newspaper, I hate to admit.

But if I read one, it’s the Telegraph or the — I don’t know, I find them all pretty difficult to read, newspapers.

I: Do you smoke?

S: No.

I: You drink?

S: Yes.

I: Yeah. Go to church?
