Use the adjective English spoken language.
In modern English there are a number of adjectives that can be used in the proposal only as a nominal part of a compound predicate, but not in the role definitions. This, in particular, adjectives afloat, afraid, alone, alight, alike, afraid, ashamed, alive, awake, asleep. In grammar it is sometimes called the words of the status categories. Thus, English correctly say:
The two brothers are alike.

They entered the hall with their face alight.
At the same time, in language very often there are adjectives, sometimes related, capable of expressing the same thought, being in position of a definition. Cf.:
I have never seen this bird alive.
Some shops sell live fish.
Adjectives used predicatively: used attributively:
afloat - afloat,  floating - на плаву, sailing
afraid - in fear - в страхе, frightened - scared - испуганный
alight - engulfed - , in fire охваченный огнем, burning - burning
alive - live живой
awake - waking бодрствующий, waking (hours) - (hours) wakefulness (часы) бодрствования
Note that some of these adjectives, in particular, the word waking, have a very limited use and compatibility.

 

Words belonging to the category of state have features compatibility and with related determinants.

safely afloat - reliably keeps on water-надежно держащийся на воде
all alight - fully engulfed in fire-полностью охваченный огнем
very much/all alone - all alone-в полном одиночестве
fast/sound asleep - hard to sleep-крепко спящий
very much/wide awake - quite awake, awake-вполне проснувшийся, бодрствующий
very much alive - quite live-вполне живой
very (much afraid - in a terrible fright- в страшном испуге
very (much) ashamed - burning with shame-сгорая от стыда
